Keith Horowitz – GeoArt

Project: Geo-Art

Lead a team to create the world’s largest Geocaching Virtual Art project, featuring 1005 geocache hides in an area 60-miles high by 60-miles wide.

I had assistance with recruiting an action committee – I brainstormed a list of people in Geocaching who we felt would be willing to put in the time and keep the secret until it was completed. In the end there were 20 people who worked on the project.

My plan included mapping out the placements, and allowing for teams in the field to adjust locations in specific directions with a goodly allowance for updates.

I had people helping me with the online portion and connecting with the admins to make it project work and be released all at once.

I provided oversight, answered questions, provided direction, came up with solutions, kept people on track and oversaw the stages. I had people volunteer to do extra work not only on the process, but some unexpected side-projects, such as memorabilia coins and T-shirts, pre-reveal announcements, as well as a powerpoint slideshow for the big reveal event.

Side-note: the completed project lasted almost a year, before unexpected negative response from a few land owners, who didn’t like us on the county roads that passed-by their areas, caused us to remove it to keep players safe. The overwhelming response was very positive, and really improved the state’s esteem in the community and the world. I know there were a number of business owners in the area that were very sad to lose the boosted income.
